Jeff Bailey (Mitchum) runs a gas station in an idyllic mountain town and is engaged to Ann (Virginia Huston). He used to be a private detective, who was hired by mobster Whit Sterling (Douglas) to find Sterling's girlfriend, Kathie Moffett (Jane Greer). But when Bailey found Moffett, she seduced him into double-crossing Sterling. Now Sterling has returned with another job for Bailey. And Bailey knows two things: He cannot refuse the job, and it can only end in murder. But both men again underestimate the beautiful Moffett's ruthless, deadly guile.
