SYNOPSIS
Selected by the Producers Branch.
35mm print! Ryan Coogler made his feature filmmaking debut with his moving drama speculating on the final day in the life of Oscar Grant, who was killed by police in an Oakland subway station in 2009. With the help of producers Nina Yang Bongiovi and Forest Whitaker, Coogler’s film deftly avoids melodrama and overt sentiment, with Michael B. Jordan’s subtly touching performance as Grant beginning a collaboration with Coogler that would lead to Creed (2015) and Black Panther (2018), and Octavia Spencer providing able support as Grant’s loving mother.
