Pacino received his fourth consecutive Oscar nomination (his third consecutive for Best Actor) for this role, tying Marlon Brando for the most consecutive acting nominations for a male actor. Sidney Lumet received his second nomination for directing this Best Picture nominee, a classic of New York “fun city” cinema, with Chris Sarandon nominated for his role as Pacino’s transgender life partner.
