This spring at the Paris, we’re charting the story of 1984 through the movies that set box office records, launched careers of superstars and firmly established the blockbuster era in Hollywood, with the year’s top ten grossing films inspiring dozens of sequels in the years to come. Beyond the blockbusters, we’ll look at the indies, the auteurs and the epics that thrilled audiences and critics forty years ago.

Don’t miss rare opportunities to see widescreen epics in Manhattan’s last single-screen cinema, with the European Theatrical Cut version of Sergio Leone’s Once Upon A Time in America, an archival 35mm print of David Lean’s A Passage to India, Roland Joffe’s The Killing Fields, and David Lynch’s legendary adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune (conveniently presented as a single feature…)

The indie film scene blossomed in 1984 with vital works from indie auteurs John Sayles (The Brother from Another Planet on 35mm) and John Cassavetes (Love Streams in 35mm), along with that year’s Oscar winner for Best Documentary, Rob Epstein’s The Times of Harvey Milk.

We invite you to turn it up to 11, with special 40th anniversary shows of This is Spinal Tap, Penelope Spheeris’ groundbreaking first fiction feature, Suburbia, and the biggest music movie of the year, Amadeus. Amadeus swept the Oscars, and we’ll be showing Milos Forman’s director’s cut.
