SYNOPSIS
Introduced by Rebekah Maysles, artist and daughter of filmmaker Albert Maysles, on Sunday, August 2
Restored by the Academy Film Archive and The Film Foundation, with funding provided by the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation.
Salesman follows four door-to-door Bible salesmen as they walk the line between hype and despair. First making calls in and around Boston, where the company is based, then in Chicago at a sales conference, and finally in the promising new territory of Miami and vicinity. Their mission is simple: to convince people to buy what one of them calls “still the best seller in the world.” But although their customers are mostly middle, working-class Catholics recommended by the local church, the Bible is a hard sell…
Film sources for the restoration came from the Maysles collection at the Academy Film Archive and included the original 16mm camera negative, first generation picture elements and 35mm magnetic sound masters. Restoration was done at Roundabout Entertainment and Audio Mechanics, with additional audio work by DJ Audio and Simon Daniel Sound.
Academy Museum film programming is generously funded by the Richard Roth Foundation.
