Malcolm Washington Presents

A series of films curated by Malcolm Washington to highlight the inspirations whose artistry informed his work on THE PIANO LESSON

DETAILS

Malcolm Washington’s feature directorial and screenwriting debut The Piano Lesson beautifully adapts August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play to the screen. Transforming this American classic into a film is a process Washington has described as a “terrifying and sacred undertaking”, guided by an “archaeological expedition” into August Wilson’s work and legacy. The resulting film, which The Wrap calls “a lesson in love, friendship and family” that “hits every note to perfection” is also informed by Washington's deep love for the filmmaking craft, and the emotionally resonant stories that have preceded him in cinema.

In Malcolm Washington Presents, we are proud to showcase six films chosen by the director as key influences on his filmmaking, particularly in his work on The Piano Lesson. Feature films by towering figures like Terrence Malick, Charles Burnett, Bong Joon-ho, and Barry Jenkins stand alongside the vibrant short form artistry of Kahlil Joseph in this collection of meditative, daring works in which traditional and experimental filmmaking co-exist in dazzling form.

The Piano Lesson opens November 8 at the Paris.
