On Friday, July 11, in the first-ever all-women’s boxing card in Madison Square Garden history, Ireland’s undisputed champion Katie Taylor will face Brooklyn’s Puerto Rican boxing trailblazer and seven-division champion Amanda Serrano in a historic trilogy fight no one will want to miss. The event will stream LIVE on Netflix exclusively at 8 PM ET/ 5 PM PT.

To celebrate this historic night, The Paris Theater is proud to present Knockout: A Cinematic Celebration of the Sweet Science, a one week cinematic event highlighting some of the greatest films in history to step into the boxing ring. In the week leading up to Taylor vs. Serrano, we’ll showcase ten films that explore all the thrills, human drama, dazzling spectacle, and flamboyant personalities inherent in the sport. 

Knockout includes Oscar winners like Best Picture champions Million Dollar Baby (screening on 35mm) and Rocky, as well as 1996 Best Documentary winner When We Were Kings, which centers on the legendary Rumble in the Jungle between George Foreman and Muhammad Ali, and will screen from a beautiful archival 35mm print. Robert Wise’s 1949 film noir classic The Set-Up also screens in 35mm, while undisputed classic of the genre Raging Bull screens from a new 4K transfer. Highlighting trailblazing women in the sport, Karyn Kusama’s breakout debut feature Girlfight will screen, as well as the intense thriller Catch the Fair One, which garnered its breakout star Kali Reis a Spirit Award nomination. Ryan Coogler’s brilliant continuation of the Rocky franchise, Creed, will also play, as will Daniel Day-Lewis’ powerful turn in Jim Sheridan’s The Boxer.

From the broad expanse of genres covered in this series, and the iconic actors who’ve tackled the challenging roles in these films, it’s clear that the sport of boxing provides a uniquely cinematic experience that can raise your heart rate unlike any other.
