ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND | Q&A with Ellen Kuras
DETAILS
Show added on Tuesday, May 19 | Post-screening Q&A with Academy Cinematographer Branch Governor Ellen Kuras.
Selected by the Cinematographers Branch.
35mm print! A heartbroken young man (Jim Carrey) discovers his ex-girlfriend has had her memories of their relationship erased and reluctantly undergoes the same procedure in this fantastical yet emotionally grounded romantic comedy-drama. Charlie Kaufman, director Michel Gondry, and Pierre Bismuth won an Oscar for the film’s imaginative original screenplay, with Kate Winslet nominated for her unsentimental performance as the amnesiac ex. Cinematographer Ellen Kuras (I Shot Andy Warhol) worked closely with Gondry to create the film’s distinctive look which perfectly bridged fantasy and reality, filming long takes in 35mm and using natural light and real locations wherever possible.
The Branch Selects program is made possible in part by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Program in Public Understanding of Science and Technology.
Academy Museum film programming is generously funded by the Richard Roth Foundation.
